Cold welding, also known as cold-pressure welding or contact welding, is the use of pressure and a vacuum rather than heat to join two pieces of metal together. How Does Cold Welding Work?

Whilst conventional welding typically consists of two metal parts being heated to their melting points, allowing them to fuse upon cooling to create a strong joint between the two metal parts, you may not be as aware of the different types of welding that don’t rely on heat.

Cold welding is one such method and is the process of joining two metal parts together without the need for heat. So, how does this occur?

Whilst cold welding can’t exceed the original strength of the metal welded and does not result in any extra metal being added when a joint or weld is made, a well-executed cold weld is able to match the strength of the metal used.

Advantages of Cold Welding

Whilst cold welding may not seem very useful, it reduces the requirements needed to weld different types of metals together, sometimes allowing for complex welds to become slightly easier in nature.

Cold welding is also a great way to join metals where typical welding techniques fail. Because of this, cold welding is used in space and in other highly technical environments to join metals where the use of heat may be impractical or simply impossible. Cold welding is especially effective in space as space is already a vacuum, removing one of the requirements for a strong cold weld.

Limitations of Cold Welding

Cold welding requires a completely pristine surface, with multiple, excessive cleaning and preparation steps.

Irregularities on the surface and contamination on a molecular level can impact the effectiveness of the weld, meaning cold welding is often reserved for only the most complex and technical of scenarios.

These limitations mean that cold welding will often be an expensive and time-consuming method of welding, only viable when other forms of welding are deemed impossible.
