Case Study 1: The Gherkin is London's Iconic Steel Icon
30 St Mary Axe, AKA The Gherkin, is a commercial office building in the heart of the City of London. Since its completion in December 2003, it has become one of the UK's most distinctive buildings and a symbol of 21st-century London. The building was designed by Norman Foster and Arup Group, and was constructed by Skanska.
The building's circular plan incorporates a diagrid structural system: a grid of diagonally interlocking steel elements, which is highly efficient in resisting wind forces. Vertical support is provided by a series of intersecting, two-storey-high A-frames that form a steel exoskeleton, eliminating the need for interior columns and giving occupants open, column-free floor plates.
Some 11,000 tonnes of steel and 24,000 square metres of glass were used in the building's construction. 3D modelling was used for the structure, cladding, and services, with the Skanska team combining expertise in structural engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, to deliver a total construction solution.
Case Study 2: The Glamour of Kensington Roof Gardens
We delivered 60 tonnes of structural steel fabrication for a multi-million-pound refurbishment of Kensington Roof Gardens, one of London's most elite private members' clubs. Sitting six floors above Kensington High Street, this Grade II-listed former nightclub is famed for hosting lavish parties attended by the late Diana, Princess of Wales and Freddie Mercury, and Madonna.
For this project which restored the building to its opulent former glory, we worked with Arcacia Limited on the complex steel framework, with fabrication carried out in stages and erection by the mobile welding team. This structure highlights our expertise in managing intricate designs, incorporating challenging elements such as dual-radius curved beams and numerous connection points that needed careful planning and precise execution.
The Roof Gardens has been described as a hugely complicated project around engineering, logistics and split deliveries.
Case Study 3: London Structural Steel in Spotlight at BBC Elstree
The iconic BBC Elstree site is one of Britain's most celebrated and long-standing production facilities, with a heritage stretching back decades and credits spanning some of the nation's best-loved films and television programmes.Â
This nearly 50-tonne steel project posed a considerable challenge requiring fabrication in stages and erection by the mobile welding team. The structure comprised a variety of steel sections, including SHS, UC, UB, and RBS beams..
This project involved fabricating steel structures that allowed the client to create mezzanine floors within a film studio. The aim was to divide a single floor into two usable levels, as the ceiling height was sufficient to accommodate the additional space. To streamline the process, in-house systems ensured the steel fabrication was carried out with precision and within the necessary tolerances.
Case Study 4: The Millennium Bridge – A Masterpiece of London Steel Minimalism
The Millennium Bridge sprung from a creative collaboration between architecture, art, and engineering. Developed with sculptor Anthony Caro and engineers Arup, London's only pedestrian bridge was the first new crossing on this part of the Thames in more than a century, linking the City and St Paul's Cathedral to the north with the Globe Theatre and the Tate Modern on Bankside.
Spanning 320 metres, it is a remarkably shallow suspension bridge. Two Y-shaped armatures support eight cables that run along the sides of the four-metre-wide deck, while steel transverse arms clamp onto the cables at eight-metre intervals to support the deck itself. This groundbreaking structure means that the cables never rise more than 2.3 metres above the deck, allowing those crossing the bridge to enjoy uninterrupted panoramic views.
Case Study 5: The ArcelorMittal Orbit: London’s Tallest Steel Sculpture
Made of enough steel to build a whopping 265 double decker buses, the ArcelorMittal Orbit is one of the most striking and enduring visual legacies of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Designed by sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor and engineer Cecil Balmon, its extraordinary looping structure has become a byword for design innovation and playful invention. At 114.5 metres, the Orbit is the UK's tallest sculpture. Steel was chosen as the only option capable of providing the minimum thickness combined with maximum strength demanded by the coiling structure. Construction took 18 months and required 560 metres of tubular red steel to form the sculpture's lattice superstructure.
Of the roughly 2,000 tonnes of steel used, 60% was recycled material. The structure is composed of 600 prefabricated star-like nodes, precision-built by a team of 100 staff in Bolton, Lancashire, and assembled on site.
