How Steel is Collected for Recycling

Once collected, steel scrap is shredded and sorted based on metallurgical properties. A furnace then melts the scrap steel so impurities can float to the surface and be removed. 

This molten steel is further refined before alloying elements like chromium and nickel are added to produce the desired steel grade. The recycled steel is then cast into moulds or continuously cast and rolled into new products. These products include structural steel beams, Steel Reinforcing Bars (Rebar), wire rods, and sheet steel.

The entire recycling process uses a fraction of the energy and emissions of primary steel production.

Steel Recycling Process

There are three main sources of steel scrap for recycling: end-of-life products like vehicles and appliances, structural steel demolition like bridges and buildings, and excess scrap from steel manufacturing.

Vehicles and appliances are collected at drop-off recycling sites before being transported to a scrap processing facility. Meanwhile, structural steel from demolished buildings and infrastructure is directly transported for recycling. Excess steel scrap from manufacturing processes is also efficiently cycled back into production.

Closed-Loop Recycling

Steel exhibits a “closed-loop” cycle where steel products are repeatedly recycled into new steel products at the end of their lifespan. This closed-loop recycling system allows steel to be reused infinitely without any loss in performance. For example, steel from recycled cans may find new life as a car, appliance, or construction beam. That product is again recyclable at the end of its life, enabling steel's endless reuse. 

Indeed, no other material can match steel's closed-loop recyclability.
